A letter to our beloved community:
As families shelter in place and workers risk their lives to continue performing work that has always been essential, CEJA remains committed to uplifting the voices of frontline community members in public decision-making processes.
We know that working class, undocumented, unhoused, disabled, elderly, immunocompromised, and low-income community members will suffer the worst impacts of this ongoing pandemic—and that our physical distance from one another will pose new challenges to our organizing in the months ahead.
Our state must expand relief efforts to undocumented community members, who pay taxes but are unable to access unemployment benefits or other public programs.
We need a complete moratorium on evictions, foreclosures, utility and water shut-offs.
We must ensure those without health insurance are able to access life-saving tests and treatment when needed. And we need to continue the fight against xenophobia, remaining true to the principles of the environmental justice movement.
While advocates and the Legislature are no longer be meeting in person, CEJA will continue to fight for frontline community members’ rights to a clean and healthy environment.
We will continue to advocate for a transparent and inclusive public process as we defend the principles of environmental justice.
In the past month we have witnessed an outpouring of organizing efforts and collective care to meet the urgent need of the present moment. A partial list of these resources and mutual aid opportunities appears below.
While this virus is new, the roots of social inequality are not.
In this moment of crisis and upheaval, we at CEJA will continue to follow the lead of environmental justice community members in statewide policy negotiations and in our everyday work with one another.
