The past year of legislation saw massive victories for environmental justice communities: we defended our rights to healthy neighborhoods through oil and gas setbacks, codified local governments’ authority to restrict oil and gas pollution, and accelerated the cleanup of idle oil wells. The California Environmental Justice Alliance (CEJA) is proud of the tireless advocacy from our communities that led to these wins, and we’re looking to pass even more exciting legislation in 2025.
Defensive Wins, a Disastrous Budget, and a Need for Community-Centered Environmental Justice Solutions
Ten years after CEJA released our first environmental justice scorecard, we have seen incredible progress in lawmakers’ awareness of environmental and climate justice issues. In 2022, grassroots organizing and advocacy propelled four of our priority bills onto the governor’s desk, and three were signed into law.
In 2021, working class communities of color confronted extreme heat, rolling blackouts, hazardous air quality, a lack of clean drinking water, and the relentless COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, an onslaught of industry lobbying continues to weaken statewide environmental health protections and present climate loopholes and dead ends in Sacramento.
The California Environmental Justice Alliance (CEJA) and California Environmental Justice Alliance Action (CEJA Action) are proud to release our 9th annual Environmental Justice Scorecard for the 2021 legislative session. This is the only scorecard in the state to grade California legislators solely on their support for environmental justice issues—with an emphasis on their support for legislation that impacts low-income communities and communities of color.
In 2020, a pandemic and historic fire season devastated working-class communities of color while billionaires steadily increased their profits. Despite the chaos of last year’s legislative session, frontline community members fought for racial, economic, and environmental justice.
CEJA Action is proud to release our exclusive scorecard for the 2019 legislative session!
